In addition to Jira issues, ActivityTimeline provides local events that can be created and managed directly inside the application.
Local events are not part of standard Jira functionality. They give teams more flexibility when planning and tracking work that does not need to be represented as a Jira issue.
Custom Event Types
ActivityTimeline includes standard system event types. You can also create your own custom event types based on these system event types.
This allows you to adapt ActivityTimeline events to your organization’s planning process.
For example, you can create custom event types such as Meeting, Admin Task, Maintenance, or Support Hours, and define which system event type they should be based on.
Creating a New Timeline Event Type
To create a new event type, go to:
ActivityTimeline Configuration → Events → Create New Timeline Event Type.
When creating a new event type, you can define:
-
Event type name & description
-
System event type it should be based on
-
Category (Applicable if Bookings are treated as worklogs. More info: Customer Q & A - WORK. My Workspace | How to track time spent on not Jira issues? )
-
Icon
Once created, the new event type will be available for planning on the ActivityTimeline timeline.
Events List
The Events page contains the full list of both system event types and custom event types created in ActivityTimeline. From this page, administrators can review, create, and manage event types used for planning across the application.
Deleting or Deactivating Event Types
Administrators can either delete or deactivate event types in ActivityTimeline.
Please note that deleting an event type also deletes all previously created events of that type. This action should be used carefully, especially if the event type has been used for historical planning, reporting, or time tracking.
If you no longer want users to create new events of a specific type but still need to keep historical data, we recommend deactivating the event type instead.
When an event type is deactivated, users will no longer be able to create new events of this type. However, previously created events will remain available in ActivityTimeline for historical reference.
